Bonifacio and Pianottoli

Bonifacio is one of the Mediterranean’s most dramatically positioned and picturesque towns. Teetering perilously on a high cliff above the sea, and topped by an impressive citadel, it offers sublime views over to Sardinia, a great selection of restaurants and bars, and a vibrant marina. The surrounding coastline is a haven for nature lovers, with vast stretches of aromatic maquis, numerous sandy bays, and granite rock formations that live long in the memory.

Porto Vecchio

Porto Vecchio’s long history dates back to at least Roman times, and today it is one of Corsica’s most charming towns. Sitting above its port, it has a great food market, numerous cafés and bars, and a welcoming, untouristy feel. Nearby are the beaches of Ovu Santu, Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, whose white sands and electric blue shallows are idyllic. Rising up behind the town, meanwhile, are the charismatic emerald mountains of the interior, whose appeal is difficult to resist.

Valinco

In southwest Corsica, between the two Genoese watchtowers of Capo di Muro and Campomoro, is the Gulf of Valinco, an area known both for its numerous paradisiacal sandy beaches and for its historic towns. At the epicentre is the marina of Propriano, with its buzzing cafés, restaurants and bars, while inland is the picture-perfect, panoramic village of Olmeto and the timeless centre of Sartène, the most Corsican of Corsican towns, according to the novelist Prosper Merimée.
