Towns and cities in Tuscany and Lazio

Viterbo Travel Guide

Rich in Etruscan heritage, and capital of the Tuscia region of northern Lazio, Viterbo became the preferred residence for a series of popes in the 13th and 14th centuries. As the "Città dei Papi", the town thrived and many of its renowned architectural wonders date from this period. Whether you're staying nearby or just across the border in southern Tuscany, a visit to this remarkable town is a must.

Things to see in Viterbo

Things to do in Viterbo
  • Follow the popes: Piazza San Lorenzo is the mediaeval hub of Viterbo and the site of two of its most prestigious buildings: the mid-13th-century Palazzo dei Papi (home to around nine popes); and the adjacent cathedral, whose origins date back to the 12th century. A visit to both offers fascinating insights into the town's history at the centre of the Catholic Church.
  • Enjoy a soak: in the middle of the 15th century, Pope Gregory V commissioned the building of a papal spa, where he could wash away his worries and enjoy a little down time. The Terme dei Papi has changed considerably since then, but if you fancy a revivifying soak in the spa's thermal waters after a day's sightseeing, we recommend you book yourself a few hours there.
  • Take a trip back in time: Viterbo's Museo Civico is housed in a gorgeous 12th-century convent, whose beautifully preserved cloisters are worth a visit in themselves. The museum hosts a collection of Etruscan sarcophagi and other archaeological finds as well as a collection of mediaeval, renaissance and baroque art.
  • Enjoy a glass of the local wine: produced in Montefiascone just a few miles north of Viterbo, Est! Est!! Est!!! is the area's white wine par excellence. When it's time for an aperitivo, head to one of Viterbo's bars and enjoy a glass as the setting sun gilds the mediaeval streets in a soft aureate glow.
