The Area

Ensconced in the rolling hills and emerald forests of the Terriccio nature reserve of the Etruscan Coast, some 40km south of Pisa, Le Cannelle is extremely well placed for spending time both on golden beaches and exploring historic, art-filled cities, towns and villages.

The closest village - about 6km away - is Castellina Marittima, a picturesque, panoramic spot that has all the essential amenities you'll need, including food shops, a couple of restaurants and cafés, and a bank. An alternative is Riparbella.

Down below on the coast, about 25-to-30 minutes' drive away, are the golden beaches of Marina di Cecina and Marina di Bibbona, and you'll be spoilt for choice, whether you're looking for organised beach clubs or remoter, wilder stretches of sand.

A 25-minute drive northeast will take you to Castiglioncello, a fashionable resort whose neo-classical villas and mansions date back to the late 19th century. Its photogenic good looks made it a haven for Italian impressionist painters and then, from the 1950s, for the stars of Italy's film industry, including Alberto Sordi, Marcello Mastroianni, and Vittorio Gassman.

The area around Le Cannelle is famous for its wine production, and particular mention should go to Bolgheri, whose world-famous vintages are crafted just over 30km away.

One of Tuscany's more under-the-radar cities is ancient Volterra, whose Etruscan origins date back to the 8th century BCE. Most of what you will see today is a magnificent. walled mediaeval centre that's overflowing with architectural gems, wondrous churches, evocative piazze, and imposing palazzi. Less than an hour away, it should not be missed.

For longer day trips, Pisa and the bustling fishing port and resort town of Livorno are both about one hour's drive. Siena is also reachable in less than two hours.
