History of the Saronic Islands
Although relatively small compared to other archipelagos in the Greek waters, the Saronic Islands’ vicinity to Athens, and the mainland in general, has always placed them in a noteworthy context throughout Greece’s long history. The island of Salamis - the largest in the Saronic grouping – was mentioned in Homer’s Iliad for playing a role in the Trojan War but more importantly, it is known for the Battle of Salamis. This was one of the greatest sea battles in ancient history in which Greek fleets were victorious over the Persian Empire in 480 BC. It is appropriate, therefore, that today the island is home to one of the major naval bases in the Hellenic Navy.
South of Salamis lies Aegina, also imbued with historical significance, having born the influence of a variety of cultures, religions, and civilisations throughout the years. The result is a trail of prehistoric, ancient Greek, Byzantine and medieval remains scattered across the island, leaving much to discover.
Meanwhile, Hydra and Spetses enjoyed much of their prosperity in the 18th and 19th centuries, their fleets considered valuable contributors to Mediterranean trade at the time. Eventually, their ships were also vital assets to the Greek War of Independence in 1821 which fought for autonomy from the slowly crumbling Ottoman Empire.
