Our guide to Aegina

Located in the Saronic Gulf, low-key Aegina has plenty to offer, from paradisiacal beaches and sleepy villages to ancient temples and archaeological sites. It’s also well-placed for day trips to Athens.

Getting there

Fly to Athens, then take a hydrofoil or a ferry from Piraeus (40mins or 1hr15).

Good to know

  • Surface area: 87km2 (approx)
  • Population: 13,000 (approx)
  • Etymology: Aegina was a sea nymph and the mother of Aeacus, who subsequently became king of the island
  • The best festival: the Fistiki Fest in September celebrates the island’s delicious pistachios
  • Most iconic sight: the Temple of Aphaea (5th century BCE), one of Greece’s finest

From our local specialist

Tree Doorway
"Aegina is rightly proud of its DOP pistachios and the island’s cooks and bakers use them in numerous dishes. My favourites are kataifi and saragli (types of baklava) and pistachio spoon sweets. There’s even a delicious pistachio liqueur to try."
