Infinita

Space and light by Gordon Guillaumier

12 Guests

6 Bedrooms

5 Bathrooms

According to the great Le Corbusier, "space and light and order" are fundamental not only to successful architecture, but to life itself. Infinita, designed by Gordon Guillaumier, excels on all three counts: its generously proportioned interiors flow out onto ample, multi-dimensional terraces; Sicily's prodigious sun is artfully managed and rationed; and the aesthetic logic of the overall design ensures that beauty is balanced by perfect practicality.

The Area

Infinita occupies a fabulously panoramic position in rolling hills just outside the fascinating baroque town of Noto and close to the beautiful nature reserve of Vendicari.

Noto is the most easterly of a chain of baroque towns now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is perhaps the most perfect of all and was rebuilt in flamboyant style following a major earthquake in 1693. Vendicari Nature Reserve boasts some of the finest sandy beaches in Sicily, some of which are pleasingly under populated even in the height of summer. Vendicari is also home to thousands of migrating birds, including flamingos, and sea turtles nest on its beaches.

If hiking in the hills is your thing, then there is some spectacular scenery in the rushing streams and waterfalls of Cassibile and at the Paleolithic burial sites in the dramatic valley of Pantalica.

Syracuse is just half an hour's drive away, and a day there is highly recommended to anybody spending time at Infinita. A little further afield, the other baroque towns of Modica, Ragusa, Scicli, and Palazzolo Acreide (this latter with an impressive Greek archaeological site) are all easily reachable.

From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.

Our stay at Infinita was magical, memorable, and relaxing. The Thinking Traveller staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was flawless. The villa was magnificent - the architecture and views. The villa chef, was extraordinary. We are considering a return next year.

Infinita was magnificent, all of the staff and cooks were excellent and charming, and house manager was extremely kind with her time and very effective with her assistance to all our needs. Everything was very smooth and easy. The only difficult thing was leaving!

Infinita is an amazing villa, with incredible views in a very good location close to Noto. As the house, the chef and the close surroundings are so good we only ventured out a couple times.
