Our guide to Spetses

With its cosmopolitan main town, its coastal beauty and its empty verdant hinterland, Spetses is a quiet, green island that’s hard to beat when it comes to car-free, carefree living.

Getting there

Fly to Athens, then either take a hydrofoil from Piraeus (2hr/3hr approx) or a transfer to Porto Heli (2hr30) followed by a hydrofoil (10mins).

Good to know

  • Surface area: 27km2 (approx)
  • Population: 4,100 (approx)
  • Most famous (adopted) daughter: Laskarina Bouboulina, a heroine of the Greek War of Independence
  • Architectural landmark: the Poseidonion Hotel, built in the style of the great hotels of the Côte d'Azur
  • Literary inspiration: the author John Fowles, a one-time resident, set The Magus on Spetses, changing its name to Phraxos

From our local specialist

Tree Doorway
"See and be seen on the terrace of the splendid Poseidonion Hotel, at the coffee shops on the mosaic cobbled streets around Dapia harbour, and on the town’s central thoroughfare, with its cocktail-sipping sophisticates and its stylish boutiques."
