An illustration of a guest book

Marea was an exceptional place, picture perfect. The house was pristine and well-equipped. Having our nearly private beach to enjoy was an added bonus. The place and setting are better than the pictures. It was a delightful place to call our home away from home. Even beach and house toys for children were provided. The hosts thought of everything! If I were to come to Sicily again, I would make it a point to return to Marea. It was like visiting a slice of heaven.

Amazing villa with the close ocean, you can hear the waves at night. Loved every minute of it. The kids loved the beach at the villa's doorstep.

The Area

Marea is situated just a few miles from Capo Passero, whose lighthouse signals Italy’s southernmost point – considerably further south than Tunis.

The coast is almost entirely given over to long sandy beaches, the very same ones landed on by British and Canadian forces during Operation Huskey in the 2nd World War.

Just to the west is the port of Pozzallo, from where, in just 90mins by hydrofoil, it is possible to get to Malta. To the north is the splendid Baroque town of Noto, Syracuse, once the mightiest city in Magna Graecia and Vendicari Nature Reserve, home to beautiful unspoilt beaches, migrating flamingos and nesting turtles.

Less than an hour's drive to the west are the other splendid towns of the Val di Noto UNESCO Heritage Site, Modica and Scicli, and, a little further afield, Ragusa.

The beaches in the area of Pozzallo and Ispica (including the one right below the villa) have received several consecutive "Bandiere Blu", attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence.

From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.
