Inside

accommodation at Corti dell’Eremia is laid out over a main house and an independent guesthouse.

The impressive double-width entrance to the main house leads into a welcoming hallway. Straight on, a wide rectangular aperture of raw concrete extends telescopically via a wall of sliding glass doors to create a shaded terrace that funnels in views of the grounds, the Irminio gorge, the rocky hills, and a sliver of silvery sea in the distance. This is first instance of how the lines between the indoor and the outdoor spaces at Corti dell’Eremia are blurred to a point of non-existence.

From this central hallway, the accommodation of the main house flows left and right. Heading left, following the soft creamy stone flooring past an office and descending a few steps, one arrives at the splendid, generously proportioned living area, which develops over two levels, divided by a couple of steps: below is a trio of fully cushioned built-in sofas gathered around a decorative fireplace and French doors opening out onto the terraces; above is another built-in sofa and a wall of vanishing glass doors that bring the views and the terraces inside.

Lofty white-washed wood-beamed ceilings create an airy atmosphere and set the tone for a light, gentle palette that imbues the whole property with a sense of sophisticated tranquillity. Here and there, classic and contemporary works of art add a dash of colour, working in tandem with strategically positioned bibelots, sculptures and antiques to ensure that there is always something of interest in your line of vision.

Moving past more sliding glass doors – this time opening out onto the internal courtyard – and a curvaceous, sculptural opening in the wall, the living area flows organically into the extremely spacious, superbly equipped kitchen. Featuring more of those high wood-beamed ceilings, a large convivial wooden dining table and a double-sized central island, this is a dream for keen cooks, professional chefs and convivial diners. Two walls of sliding glass pocket doors meet at right angles and open up fully to allow the space to merge with a shady al fresco dining and sitting terrace.

Back at the entrance hall and turning right, a few steps lead up to a corridor, off which are the remaining two bedrooms of the main house:

• the main bedroom, an extremely well-proportioned double with golden, wood-beamed and cane ceilings, two sets of French windows accessing a private terrace, a dressing area, and a large, semi-open en-suite bathroom with tub, shower, separate WC, and glass doors opening out to an al fresco shower
• a double bedroom with wood-beamed and cane ceilings, an en-suite shower room, countryside views and access to a private terrace

The third bedroom in the main house, a spacious double-twin, is accessed from a hallway behind the kitchen. It comes with an en-suite shower room, a separate WC, glorious country views, and access to a private terrace.

The remaining accommodation at Corti dell’Eremia is located in the guesthouse, which is accessed from the central courtyard gardens. Here there are three bedrooms:

• a double with en-suite shower room and views of (and access to) the central courtyard
• two double bedrooms, each with en-suite shower rooms, countryside views and access to a shared terrace

Outside

sitting in nearly 75 acres of private land, Corti dell’Eremia offers total seclusion from the outside world and seemingly no end of al fresco spaces in which guests can come together for convivial moments or enjoy personal time in perfect privacy.

At the heart of the property, enclosed by walls and the two wings of the house, is the wonderful central courtyard. Creamy-stoned paving spreads over several levels, connected by steps and divided into distinct spaces by pockets of vibrant greenery and exotic Mediterranean flora. In one corner, a path leads through an opening to a lawned area dotted with orange trees outside the guesthouse; in another, accessed from the living area and the kitchen-diner, is an al fresco dining area; in a third corner is a large sweep of well-cushioned built-in seating. Finally (for the courtyard, at least) steps lead up to a roof terrace, from where the remarkable views of the Irminio gorge and river, the dramatic, classically Ragusan countryside, and the sea-blue horizon are at their best – most definitely a contender as the best spot for aperitivo hour.

The walls of sliding glass doors in the living area and the kitchen-diner open out on to a wide, L-shaped expanse of shaded terrace with the main al fresco dining area and a sitting area with an outdoor fireplace, and a sun-kissed lounge area with well-cushioned built-in seating. Once again, the views from here are majestic.

Fanning out from different rooms in the house like tributaries, a series of paths wend their way down through the subtly landscaped grounds to a small copse of trees, which is home to a naturally shaded sitting area. From there, a single path continues down to the pool area, which is magnificently positioned above the gorge. The enticing blue waters of the 18m-long pool are looked over by a large stone construction, which offers plenty of shade and comfy seating.

Parts of the route to this property are unpaved and a little rough. We therefore recommend guests hire a car with high ground clearance.

Due to the nature of the property including terraces low walls and several drops around the grounds, children must be supervised at all times.

The number of steps that must be negotiated to get into and/or around this property might make it unsuitable for people with mobility problems.

This property is surrounded by countryside, some of which is unfenced and may include drops or steep slopes. We therefore recommend that younger children are supervised by an adult when exploring the grounds.
