The house on the dunes
The name Cabanna evokes scenes of carefree seafront serenity, but it’s also a play on words: in Sicilian, it means “the right spot” or “here’s good”. In both respects, the owners have chosen well, for Cabanna, hidden away in a shady grove of acacia trees bordering the dunes and beach of Costa dell’Ambra, is a free-spirited, perfectly situated retreat that encapsulates all that is desirable about chic, toes-in-the-sand living.

Cabanna sits right on the beach of Costa dell'Ambra, a 2km-stretch of sand just to the west of Capo Passero, whose lighthouse signals Italy’s most meridional point – considerably further south than Tunis.
The part of the Sicilian coastline is almost entirely given over to long sandy beaches, the very same ones landed on by British and Canadian forces during Operation Huskey in the 2nd World War. Many in the area have received several consecutive Blue Flags, attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence.
The nearest town for shopping, restaurants and other amenities is Pachino (famous for its cultivations of IGP cherry tomato), and just a few kilometres beyond that is the charming fishing village of Marzamemi, whose seafood restaurants and summery vibe are highly recommended.
Some 40 minutes to the north is the splendid baroque town of Noto, while Syracuse, once the mightiest city in Magna Graecia, is about an hour's drive. Vendicari Nature Reserve, home to beautiful unspoilt beaches, migrating flamingos and nesting turtles, is just 30 minutes away.
Around an hour's drive northwest are the other splendid towns of the Val di Noto UNESCO Heritage Site, Modica and Scicli, and, a little further afield, Ragusa.
Finally, some 30km to the west is the port of Pozzallo from where, in just 90 minutes by hydrofoil, it is possible to get to Malta.

A helicopter trip in Sicily over Etna and to the Aeolian Islands is a highly moving experience, enough to reduce grown men and women to tears! Book with us for a truly unforgettable addition to your Sicilian holiday.

From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.
