Everything about our stay at L'Argentiera exceeded our expectations. It was perfect. The chef was fantastic and everybody was friendly. We kept changing our plans on the fly and they made it all happen.

L'Argentiera was more beautiful than the pictures portrayed. The village of Castro Marina was so quaint yet met every need. We had many friends coming and going and all had the time of their lives! We would return to L'Argentiera in a heartbeat! It's lovely!

L'Argentiera was fabulous and Castro Marina was amazing. I have nothing at all to complain about. All 12 of us rate the Castro area. The house staff were all brilliant and we had a perfect family holiday that we would all recommend.

L'Argentiera occupies an enviable seafront position just a few minutes' walk from a selection of restaurants, bars and shops at Castro Marina. Up above is the old defensive citadel of Castro with its evocative castle standing majestically on a rocky outcrop. Castro too has some good eateries and it is a joy to wander through its narrow medieval streets. Thanks to the cleanliness of its waters and the quality of its lidos, Castro Marina has been awarded a Blue Flag for the last few years. Heading north or south from Castro along the spectacular coast road, you will pass through charming fishing towns and above rocky coves. To the north, about 20km away, is the gorgeous town of Otranto, while to the south, you will soon come to the charming resort town of Leuca, home to beautiful Liberty villas from the early 20th century, a sanctuary to the Virgin Mary, a glamorous marina and an imposing lighthouse, signaling your arrival at the very heel of the Italian boot! Also within easy reach, and highly recommended, is the beautiful baroque town of Lecce (45 minutes' drive) and the historic island town of Gallipoli (1 hour's drive).

The gastronomic traditions of the Salento are simply delicious, and deliciously simple. The area's fabulously tasty ingredients are given the space to speak for themselves, and local recipes are inextricably linked to the seasons.

Home to some of Italy's loveliest beaches and most dramatic rocky coastline, the Salento is a haven for sea lovers. From the southernmost tip near Leuca, running up the west coast to Gallipoli and beyond, is a vast, almost non-stop strip of paradisiacal golden sand and transparent azure waters. To the east, the Adriatic coastline is more varied, offering sandy beaches, Karstic grottoes, chalk cliffs and salt-water lagoons.

No trip to Salento would be complete without a wine tasting to discover the famous Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes accompanied by some local delicacies. As well as these spectacular local wines, Puglia is typified by the millions of ancient olive trees scattered across the region, which produce extra virgin olive oil of a spectacular quality. A guided tour will give you a fascinating insight into the secrets of its production.
