The house of stone above the sea
Il Tomaro rises on a hill above the sun-hazy seas of Puglia’s southern tip. From first glance, it seems as if it’s always been part of the landscape, as indigenous (and as irresistible) as the delicious local variety of tomato the farm used to produce. Meticulously restored using traditional materials and techniques, it has been given a new lease of life as a bewitching retreat for those in search of harmony, character, style and comfort.

Il Tomaro is a beautiful, high quality, elegantly appointed villa. From the moment we arrived, it was like we were staying at someone’s well-loved beach home. We had a beautiful stay. What stood out most for us? The quality and personal feeling that the villa gave us. It is clearly a much-loved place for a family and we were lucky enough to experience it during our time in Italy.

Il Tomaro sits in a panoramic position above the southern tip of Salento, just a few minutes' drive away from the glorious, seemingly endless, sandy beaches of Pescoluse and Torre Pali. A little further up the coast (25mins) is the idyllic beach of Riva di Ugento, so sea lovers are well and truly spoilt for choice.
Just inland from Il Tomaro are the quiet and attractive little towns of Morciano di Leuca, Salve, Alessano and Castrignano del Capo, all of which offer plenty in terms of shopping, restaurants, cafés and bars.
Just 9km southeast, meanwhile, is the charming Liberty-style resort town of Santa Maria di Leuca, which offers a great selection of restaurants and bars and an internationally famous yachting marina.
Slightly further afield, but still easily driveable in between 30 minutes and 1 hour are the fortified island town of Gallipoli, the delightful east-facing town of Otranto and the exquisite baroque town of Lecce.

One of the region’s main attractions is without a doubt its glorious coastline and transparent azure seas. This is particularly true of Leuca, where the Adriatic and the Ionian seas meet.Up and down the Adriatic on the east coast of Puglia and the Ionian on the west coast are many beaches to discover. From nature reserves with wide expanses of sand and sea to sandy or rocky bays in between, there is something for everyone!

The gastronomic traditions of the Salento are simply delicious, and deliciously simple. The area's fabulously tasty ingredients are given the space to speak for themselves, and local recipes are inextricably linked to the seasons.

No trip to Salento would be complete without a wine tasting to discover the famous Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes accompanied by some local delicacies. As well as these spectacular local wines, Puglia is typified by the millions of ancient olive trees scattered across the region, which produce extra virgin olive oil of a spectacular quality. A guided tour will give you a fascinating insight into the secrets of its production.
