About the area

Monopoli, Puglia

Just 30km south of Puglia’s capital, Bari, Monopoli's is a lovely town for a day trip or as a base for exploring the surrounding areas. The town's architecture is a testament to its strategic importance through the centuries, from the majestic cathedral with its towering bell tower to the imposing Charles V Castle which guards the town. We’d recommend combining a day trip to Monopoli with a visit to the town of Polignano a Mare just up the coast, mixing a dip in the sea with a good lunch and a wander around the old town centre.

Things to do in Monopoli

Things to do in Monopoli
  • Explore the old town: Wander through the charming streets of Monopoli's historic centre, discovering its colourful street market at Piazza XX Settembre. Then head east towards the cathedral. To find it just look upwards and you are sure to see its elegantly conceived bell tower thrusting into the sky. Built in 1693, the tower is over 60 metres high, completely dominating the town below.
  • Relax on the Monopoli’s seafront: Boasting defensive walls and sandy bay, the town’s seafront is ideal for a refreshing dip. Walk the scenic Lungomare seafront promenade, which is lined with historic buildings and offers stunning views of the coastline.
  • Visit the Charles V Castle: Visit the impressively robust Charles V Castle, built in 1552 - the view from the top is wonderful.
  • Discover the port: Passing under an archway outside the castle, you will arrive in the port, comprised by a series of little harbours. Wandering half way round the first one, busy with fishermen mending their nets or unloading the day's catch, a little street will take you back into town and, along Via Cimino, back to your starting point at Piazza XX Settembre.
