About the area

Galatina, Puglia

Just 20 km south of the enchanting city of Lecce, Galatina is a town steeped in history and architectural beauty, with roots dating back to the 12th century. The town flourished under the noble Orsini family in the 14th century, who left their mark with the construction of the Church of Saint Catherine, a stunning example of late Romanesque architecture. During its golden age in the 17th and 18th centuries, Galatina saw the construction of several Baroque churches and aristocratic palaces, each with distinctive decorative elements that reflect a unique twist on Lecce's baroque style. Today, visitors can wander the charming streets, admire the town's historic gates and castle, and enjoy its laid-back tranquillity.

Things to do in Galatina

Things to do in Galatina
  • Explore the town’s characterful churches: Visit the town’s first great church, the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, built in 1390 by Count Raimondello Orsini. Here you can admire its beautiful late Romanesque architecture and splendid frescoes by Francesco d’Arezzo. We’d also recommend seeing the Chiesa di San Paolo, an 18th-century church famous for the curative powers of its well’s water, which was believed to heal those bitten by the tarantula.
  • Stroll through the old town: Wander the picturesque streets of the old town centre and discover its uniform Baroque architecture. Galatina has also preserved three out of five original gates that once protected the town in the 16th century – Porta Nuova (or San Pietro), Porta Luce, and Porta Cappuccini.
  • Visit aristocratic palaces: Take a tour of the stunning palazzi - a couple of fine examples include Palazzo del Concerto with its airy loggia, Palazzo Scrimeri with its sumptuously sculpted balcony supports and window decorations and Palazzo Sanlorenzo-Bardoscia with its elaborate facade.
  • Enjoy local cuisine: Savour traditional Puglian dishes at one of Galatina's restaurants, offering everything from seafood to handmade pasta. We’d also recommend stopping by Pasticceria Ascalone, the birthplace of the pasticciotto, a delicious pastry filled with egg custard and a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth!
  • Discover nearby attractions: Just a short drive away is Lecce, the "Florence of the South," famous for its Baroque architecture, historic churches, and vibrant street life. You may also wish to explore the coastal town of Gallipoli, known for its beautiful beaches and delicious seafood.
