About the property
Inside
accommodation at Saline is laid out over three floors of a main house and an externally accessed guest room.In the main house, the entrance leads into a welcoming hallway that connects the ground floor's two wings.
A few steps to the right is the communal hub of the property, a generously proportioned, light-filled space that has a soothing ambience and an understated contemporary charm. White walls and ceilings and sandy floors provide a blank canvas for furnishings and fittings in honeyed wood. Integrated lighting and well-designed, built-in storage hint at the property’s architectural pedigree, and four sets of wide glass doors both bring in the sea views and allow the space to flow outside with the minimum of fuss.
To one end, stylish, contemporary modular sofas and an easy chair gaze out to sea, flanked to one side by a decorative fireplace; to the other, a large dining table is served by an immaculate, fully equipped kitchen with smooth wooden cabinetry, and a central island. The graceful, tranquil aura of this space pervades the whole property, bringing a real sense of well-being.
The second wing of the ground floor is home to two of the main house's four bedrooms:
- a good-sized double with sea views, terraces access, and a walk-through wardrobe leading to an en-suite shower room
- a second, spacious double with glimpses of the sea, an en-suite shower room, and access to a secluded terrace
Stairs lead up from the hallway to the first floor, which is home to the master bedroom, a luminous, generous double with fabulous sea views, an en-suite shower room, and a private terrace overlooking the gardens, the sparkling Aegean and the neighbouring island of Antiparos.
The lower ground floor of the main house is via an external door and a flight of steps, which lead to a double-twin bedroom with en-suite shower room and a TV room. There are no views from these rooms.
The guest room is located a few metres from the entrance to the main house. It hosts a bright double bedroom and an en-suite shower room.
Outside
al fresco life at Saline is a joy to experience, thanks largely to the property’s prime seafront position overlooking the Aegean and the neighbouring island of Antiparos. The open-plan communal space and the first bedroom on the ground floor open out directly onto a wide-open expanse of perfectly paved terrace that sweeps along the seafront side of the house. It is here that you will spend most of your waking hours. High walls of local grey-and-bronze stone provide a sense of seclusion and privacy, and there are plenty of sun-kissed and shady spots in which to while away the hours.
Your first port of call might be the recessed, well-shaded sitting area that surveys the scene from a prime central position (also accessed from the hallway). A similarly secluded and sheltered spot is is found outside the second ground-floor bedroom.
Sitting in pride of place, just over 10m from the main house, is the magnificent infinity pool, which hangs above the exotically-planted, seafront gardens. It is flanked by quality sunloungers and a well-cushioned, built-in sitting area.
To the far end of the pool is a voluminous, cane-shaded social area that's furnished for both lounging and for dining. It is served by a kitchen-bar area with a sink and fridge and, via a door in a nearby wall, a shower room with WC and a fabulously large barbecue and grill zone that’s also directly accessed from the kitchen.
A path of stepping stones leads through the gardens below the pool, where, amongst the palm trees, is a tranquil, sea-view gazebo, and a suspended conical cocoon that sways to the rhythms of the gentle sea breezes.
The gardens and terraces are illuminated at night, creating a thoroughly magical atmosphere in which to dine late into the night under the stars of the Cyclades.
The master bedroom on the first floor of the main house has its own perfectly panoramic, private terrace, from where the views are at their very best.
Last but not least, a path to the side of the gardens leads down to the translucent waters of the Aegean and a little pebbly beach accessed only by a handful of other villas along this stretch of coast.
About the Area
Saline is situated on the southwest coast of Paros looking out over the sea to Antiparos. The nearest village, Aliki, is just three kilometres away, and offers most day-to-day amenities, including mini-markets and tavernas.
For many people, Paros is the most authentic of the Cyclades. One of the larger islands, it has something for everyone, young or old, party-goers or culture-seekers, bourgeois or bohemian. Amongst its many attractions are buzzing little towns, myriad beaches, world-famous windsurfing conditions, gourmet restaurants, sleepy traditional villages with waterfront fish tavernas, religious, cultural and historical sites, and a vibrant nightlife scene.
Thanks to the relatively limited distances involved - the island measures less than 25km from north to south - it is easy to explore in full in a week or two, no matter where you're staying. Its mountainous hinterland, with peaks rising up to around 700m, is dotted with the occasional monastery and crisscrossed by old mule tracks. Down on the coast, meanwhile, there is an array of beautiful sandy beaches and idyllic coves, and a day or two spent on a boat exploring these is heartily recommended.
In terms of towns and villages, sleepy Marpissa, buzzing Parikia (the capital and main port), are just a, 20- and a 25-minute drive from Saline. The first is a white-washed beauty that appears unchanged for centuries. It’s a pleasure to amble round its narrow streets, while a walk up to the monastery of St Anthony on the hill above offers spectacular views of the island. The second is a vibrant little town gathered around a semi-enclosed bay that woos visitors with its sandy beaches, its many bars and tavernas, its archaeological museum, and its impressive Byzantine Church.
In the north of the island is the picturesque village Naousa, whose little harbour, web of narrow streets flanked by shops and tavernas, and Venetian castle make it a pleasure to spend time in. Just across the bay from Naousa is idyllic Kolimpithres beach, renowned for its transparent waters and fascinating rock formations, while for those with an interest in history, a visit to the Mycenaean Acropolis is called for. Sitting atop a rocky scarp high above Kolimpithres, it was built way back in the 13th century BCE and offers not only insights into Paros's long history but also stunning views. It’s quite a walk to get up there, so you may wish to tackle it in the early morning or late afternoon when it’s not so hot.
Paros's most northerly tip, the Monastiri peninsula, is given over to a protected park covering some 80 hectares of rocky, element-sculpted hills, hidden sandy beaches, walking trails, and undisturbed flora and fauna. It’s a great day out for nature lovers and hikers with the added bonus of an end-of-excursion swim in the sea.
Cultural tours are readily available on Paros, so not matter whether you wish to learn about Parikia's old town centre, the ancient marble quarries, or the unique island of Despotiko, you'll be able to delve into the island's history with ease. Children are well catered for too, and a trip to the butterfly nature reserve just north of the airport is good fun.
If all that wasn't enough, Paros's little sister, Antiparos, is just a 10-minute ferry ride across the water from nearby Pounta, making a little island hopping eminently possible.
Considerations
Because of natural changes to the coastline from season to season, the pebbly beach below this property may not look as it does in the photos. Please also note that access to the sea across the pebbles may not be easy for those with limited mobility. In any case, we recommend wearing sea shoes.
The villa is located in close proximity to Paros Airport, and during high season — especially on weekends — the sound of incoming flights can occasionally be heard as they land nearby.
Saline features a fantastic infinity pool, offering swimmers stunning views while in the pool. There is a drop off the infinity side so we recommend children are supervised at all times. Please refer to our general safety page if you would like more information about infinity pools.
You may also wish to know that the pool has a single depth of 1.6m.
Please note that there are several neighbouring villas on Saline's stretch of coastline.
Please note that due to the risk of wildfires, the use of fire pits and barbecues is restricted when the weather is windy or temperatures are high. This is particularly common in July and August. More information will be provided in your House Guide and via your local specialist.
