A food and travel photography workshop at Rocca delle Tre Contrade

LED BY AWARD WINNING TRAVEL AND FOOD PHOTOGRAPHER ØIVING HAUG AND DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY CAROLINE METCALFE

If your passions include photography, travel, excellent food and wine, and refined living, we have a unique proposition for you: an exclusive, week-long travel and food photography workshop in the luxurious Sicilian surroundings of Rocca delle Tre Contrade, one of the finest luxury villas in the Mediterranean.

From 3rd-10th November 2018, you'll join experts Øivind Haug, award-winning travel and food photographer, Caroline Metcalfe, director of photography, and Jayne Cross, food stylist and author, for an all-inclusive week of photographic storytelling workshops focusing on travel and food.

Introducing the workshop

Sicily boasts a millennial history, innumerable artistic treasures, a gastronomic heritage par excellence, and an infinite variety of land and seascapes, all of which will provide the backdrop and inspiration for a week of  individually-tailored photographic workshops, guided excursions and exceptional food and wine.

There will also be plenty of free time to enjoy the luxurious environs of Rocca delle Tre Contrade, with its spacious, impeccably finished interiors, its priceless views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, its extensive grounds, a superlative heated infinity pool, and a tennis court.

Who's the course for?

The programme is designed for all skill levels, from passionate amateur photographers and wanderlusting instagrammers, to experienced globetrotters who revel in finding unique photo opportunities.

What are the themes of the programme?

The week’s programme offers a variety of options to suit all tastes, including portrait, landscape, travel, and food and wine photography. Each day you will be set a photographic challenge, taking you into the kitchen and the dining room and out on the road, exploring local markets, towns and landscapes. You may either focus on a particular aspect or take a more holistic approach.

What will I take home from the workshop?

Your mentors for the week (see the following section for detailed information) are all experts in their respective fields. Through a series of dedicated workshops and, time permitting, one-to-one tutorials, they will let you into the secrets of great photography in all its guises, with a particular emphasis on food and travel storytelling. At the end of each day's shooting, after your photos have been edited, your work will be evaluated and discussed in detail, with particular regard to its narrative qualities.

By the end of the week, you will have an improved understanding of your camera equipment's technical potential (lenses, filters and settings, for example), and a new-found knowledge of photographic techniques (how to maximise natural light, shoot angles, create compositions, etc.). You will also be able to style a shoot from start to finish, identifying subjects, evaluating props, choosing colour palettes, designing set-ups and editing photos. Equally importantly, you will have taken significant steps in developing your own personal style.

There will be a strong social and gastronomic element to the week too, and we very much hope that you will return home not only with enhanced photographic skills, but also with lasting memories, new friendships and an even stronger passion for travel and food.

Your accommodation - Rocca delle Tre Contrade

Rocca delle Tre Contrade, a sumptuously restored and refurbished aristocratic estate, occupies a stunning position atop its own hill on Sicily’s east coast. Inside are 12 exquisitely crafted en-suite bedrooms, voluminous living and dining areas, a Hammam, a gym and a professional-grade kitchen. Uninterrupted 360-degree panoramas take in the sparkling Ionian Sea to one side, and the fertile flanks and lava peak of Mount Etna to the other. These magical views are further enhanced by the intense greens and citrus flashes of the villa’s extensive grounds, which feature lemon groves, fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, a tennis court and, rivalling the magnificence of Mother Nature herself, a spectacular 25-metre, south-facing heated infinity pool.

Dinner in a Sicilian villa is pretty much our dream vacation.”
