Sicily's Mount Etna is a significant challenge even for a seasoned walker. On top of that, it is also a highly active volcano! It is, however, one of Sicily's prime attractions, so part of our job is to make sure you see it in the best way possible.
Two great ways are on foot, or from a helicopter. Another excellent way to see Etna, particularly for a family, or a group of people with differing levels of stamina and physical fitness, is with a private 4x4. A 4x4 trip organised by The Thinking Traveller. It is a really great day out!
A Land Rover will get you far enough off the beaten track to see some fascinating aspects of this great volcano that the ordinary tourist won't see, and the knowledgeable guide who will accompany you will give you some great insights.

N.B. the Etna excursions last from approximately 9.30am to 4.30pm and explore the mountain up to an altitude of about 2,000 metres. It is possible to go higher - up to around 2900m (Etna stands at 3,323m) - by making use of the privately run cable car and mountain bus service.
Clothing: to get the most out of your day on the volcano, we recommend you wear trainers or, better still, walking boots suitable for rugged terrain (please do not wear flip-flops or sandals). We also suggest that you take a wind-proof jacket and a jumper for when you ascend to a certain altitude (even in the summer the temperature can be cool). You may also find it useful to take a rucksack.

Terms and Conditions
Think Experiences are provided by independent local companies which are neither owned not controlled by The Thinking Traveller and for whom we act only as an agent. Whilst every effort is made to keep the description of every Think Experience up to date, the provider may cancel or amend your experience at their discretion for many reasons including where it considers that there may be a risk to your comfort, health or safety. Some excursions/activities (i.e. helicopter rides, excursions on Mount Etna, boat charter, etc.) may contain an element of risk or require a good level of physical fitness, and, if in doubt, you should contact us so we can put you in contact directly with the local provider before deciding to buy. Please also check that you are covered for the activity(ies) in question by your travel insurance policy.
In acting in the capacity of an agent on behalf of the provider, your contract will be with that provider and will be subject to their standard terms and conditions, and it will not form part of your contracted holiday arrangements with us. Any complaint (including any allegation of breach of contract or negligence) should be taken up with the excursion/activity provider directly. We will do our best to assist you, but will have no liability in relation to the performance of that contract.
