An absolutely top-level luxury villa with extensive grounds, stunning views, a tennis court and the most spectacular heatable infinity pool in Sicily.

Rocca delle Tre Contrade occupies a stunningly panoramic position atop its own hill on Sicily’s east coast. Uninterrupted 360-degree views take in the sparkling Ionian Sea to one side and the fertile flanks and lava peak of Mount Etna to the other. The views of this former aristocratic estate are further enhanced by the intense greens and citrus flashes of the villa’s grounds, which feature lemon groves, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens. The magnificence of Mother Nature is rivalled only by the spectacular 25-metre, south-facing heatable infinity pool, the like of which we have never seen, and the delightful interiors, which have been renovated and refurbished to exactingly high standards.

Internet Connections Explained

All The Thinking Traveller's villas have some kind of Internet facility and, where possible, we try to ensure that this is an ADSL broadband Wi-Fi connection.

However, some rural areas and those far from the main towns and cities have not yet been connected to the high-speed broadband network. Therefore, in some of our villas we offer an alternative type of connection (specified in the amenities table of each individual villa page). 

Please note that although we work very hard to provide reliable internet service at our villas, these services are potentially erratic and can fail due to network failures completely out of our control. We regret that we cannot accept responsibility for loss of connection due to such network failures.

Here is some information about the most common connection types:

ADSL Broadband

This is by far the fastest and most reliable connection type available and uses traditional copper wires. In the UK, ADSL is most commonly referred to as broadband. It is suitable for most surfing requirements. Generally an ADSL line is only available within two miles of a telephone exchange, so in rural or more remote areas it usually not available.

An ADSL Internet connection in a villa can then be distributed using a Wi-Fi router, allowing a wireless connection with one or more device, or by a cable, which can be plugged into most laptops.

NB If a fast, constant and reliable Internet connection is vital for you (i.e. you expect to be working a lot during your holiday), please specify this to your Villa Specialist. It may be better to rent a villa with an ADSL broadband connection.


3G WiFi Internet routers

In some of our villas, 3G Wi-Fi Internet connections are provided by a small router unit that uses the 3G mobile network, similar to that used by many mobile phones. The unit receives the signal and retransmits it wirelessly making it possible for a few devices to connect at the same time. 3G Wi-Fi units work best in the immediate area around them (i.e. they won’t create a Wi-Fi environment throughout the entire villa) and so the best connection will be within close range of the unit, usually in the same room.

The signal may be affected by weather conditions (i.e. strong winds or storms), and the overall strength depends entirely on the service provider's presence in the area. We cannot accept responsibility for slow or absent signals.

Please note that 3G Wi-Fi is provided for basic Internet browsing and checking of email only. Guests are requested not to download large files such as movies or make Skype video calls, as most units have a maximum monthly data usage of 10Gb.

Mobile Broadband Internet Dongles/Keys

Dongles, or Internet keys, can be slotted into a USB port on your computer and use a data SIM card to connect to a 3G or other data network, normally supplied by mobile phone networks. At the villas where this is provided, clients are usually requested to buy their own data SIM card and top up as they go (details of where and how to purchase one are provided in the House Guide you will receive before departure).

The signal may be affected by weather conditions (i.e. strong winds or storms), and the overall strength depends entirely on the service provider's presence in the area. We cannot accept responsibility for slow or absent signals.

WiMAX / Satellite connections

WiMAX and satellite Internet connections have performance levels similar to cabled ADSL hi-speed Internet connections. Wi-Fi access within the property is provided by a special modem-router. WiMAX and Satellite connections are present in our villas when there is no normal cabled broadband infrastructure in the area (still quite common in more remote areas). These kind of connections may be affected by atmospheric conditions, however, so we cannot guarantee that the signal will be as constant as cabled connections. The connection speed of this type connection in our Ionian Island villas is a little slower and comes with a limit of Mbs, so guests are requested not to download large files, stream films or use Skype to make calls.


Connecting to the Internet abroad using your smartphone or tablet (roaming)

As of June 2017, there are no roaming charges for EU citizens (with an EU provider) travelling within the EU. 

If you are travelling from outside the EU and wish to use your smartphone or tablet while on holiday, here are a few tips for cutting down on foreign data-roaming charges:

The first thing to do is to check with your provider to see if there are any special deals available (there's usually something on offer). You should also make sure your phone is unlocked (you can ask your operator to do this) if you wish to buy a foreign SIM card while you're away.

If there are no suitable deals available from your operator (and your phone/tablet has been unlocked), we recommend you buy a local prepaid data SIM card (details of where and how can be found in your House Guide). It might also be useful to bring a cheap handset, put your UK SIM into the cheap handset and the local data SIM into your smartphone, so that any data you access will be charged at the local rate. If you do buy a local SIM, most smart phones can then be used to provide a Wi-Fi hotspot, providing data access for up to five devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Finally, when abroad, switch off 3G, switch off ‘data roaming’ on iPhones or switch the priority to Wi-Fi rather than 3G on Symbian devices, thus avoiding charges when your phone attempts to access emails.

in 10 of the 12 bedrooms there is a floor based water-to-air mechanism chosen for its low architectural and environmental impact. It pushes air from the room past heat exchangers inserted into channels in the floor, through which water flows at temperatures below 12°C. The cooled air is then released back into the room, eliminating excess humidity at the same time. The objective of the system is twofold: to remove humidity from the air, thus increasing the sense of wellbeing; to lower the temperature to a comfortable level (around 25°C) for sleep. Inside: accommodation at Rocca delle Tre Contrade is spread over three floors and comprises twelve spacious and supremely panoramic bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a succession of light, airy reception rooms, a professionally-equipped kitchen and a large dining room. Furnishings throughout have been chosen with quality, comfort and aesthetic appeal in mind. An elegant blend of authentic antique pieces, reclaimed furniture and original features hint at the villa’s mid-19th century noble origins. Calming colours and tasteful original art throughout are easy on the eye, while generously cushioned armchairs and sofas and king and queen-size beds ensure ample possibilities for repose and relaxation. The sumptuous bathrooms are designed for those who love to luxuriate and feature top-spec modern fittings and local marble and lava stone basins, showers and splashbacks.

Ground floor: from the impressive entrance terrace one accesses a series of living areas (five in total), connected by wide arches and topped by high vaulted ceilings. These flow around an internal stairwell to the superbly equipped kitchen and voluminous dining area, which has won an architecture award for its subtle combination of industrial design (such as polished concrete floors and glass walls) and restored original features. Moving through to the ground floor wing, one comes to two bedrooms, a double and a double-twin both with en-suite shower rooms, private balconies and access to the gardens. An internal stairway leads down to the lower ground floor and another large double-twin bedroom with en-suite shower room with French windows opening onto the garden from where one can take in views of Etna. The lower ground floor is also home to a well-equipped gym/wellness room with changing facilities, fridge, guest bathroom, shower, steam room and direct access to the gardens and pool area.

First floor: the first floor of the wing is home to two double bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms and double-twin with en-suite bathroom with shower and tub. On the first floor of the main house are four bedrooms: two doubles with en-suite shower rooms and access to a panoramic shared wrap-around balcony and two master suites (double-twins), each with its own luxurious en-suite bathroom with stand-alone tub and shower and access to a large shared terrace with stunning sea views.

Second floor: the second floor of the main house has two more exquisitely furnished double-twin bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms, connected by an open-air patio. These bedrooms also have bunk beds, which may be used either to accommodate 3-4 children in one room or a family wishing to have their children in the same room. In either case, the maximum occupancy remains 24 (including children). If you would like to use the bunk beds for additional guests (over the maximum occupancy of 24), an extra weekly per person fee will be payable. Please contact us for details.

Outside: the outside areas at Rocca delle Tre Contrade are abundant and offer many a panoramic terrace, a wide selection of al fresco dining areas, a large lawned garden and, via a magical set of steps that tunnel through an immense lava stone wall, the remarkable 25-metre long, L-shaped infinity pool. Suspended over the surrounding lemon groves, doing lengths in this pool is a unique experience: swim one way and you feel as if you're heading out to sea. Turn round and Mount Etna becomes your destination! A shaded area to one side of the pool hosts a table tennis table, and just below the pool is a second shaded zone, the perfect spot for an al fresco massage perhaps. Surrounding all this and the splendid International Tennis Federation-sized clay tennis court are the luscious lemon groves, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens of the extensive grounds. The views, in case you needed reminding, are bewitching, no matter where you look!

Service: the staff at Rocca delle Tre Contrade, including caretaker, housekeeper, maids and Sicilian cook, will ensure you never have to lift a finger during your stay. The maids will service your rooms on a daily basis (including Sundays and Bank Holidays) and change your linen and towels mid-week, the caretaker will ensure the correct functioning of the house and pool and the cook will be on hand to prepare delicious meals. Just let the owner or the Local Manager know a day in advance whether you will be dining at home and the staff will see to the rest. Please note that the cook's services are included in the rental price but the cost of ingredients is extra and should be paid locally on presentation of receipts.

Ecological credentials: Rocca delle Tre Contrade has a great many eco-friendly attributes, including the following:

- approx. 80% of the house's hot water supply is heated by solar panels
- approx. 30% of the house's electricity is generated by photovoltaic panels
- there is a low-impact air conditioning system
- there is LED lighting throughout (reducing electricity consumption by 80%)
- all organic waste and untreated paper and cardboard is composted
- all other waste is separated before collection for recycling
- the house's water supply is filtered and treated (reducing the need to transport mineral water and minimising plastic waste)
- glass bottles are used wherever possible, further reducing plastic waste
- all laundry is done using water (no dry cleaning) and dried in natural conditions
- the property's vegetable garden and 7-acre lemon grove supplies 0km ingredients for the kitchen

 

Think About

One of the top villas in the Mediterranean!

Rocca delle Tre Contrade's hill-top position affords it refreshing breezes in the hot summer months and excellent views of the sea and Mount Etna all year round. Depending on the direction of the wind, and by dint of the property's elevated position, traffic noise may occasionally be audible in certain areas of the grounds, though not from inside.

Toddlers and young children need constant supervision at Rocca delle Tre Contrade due to the presence of drops around the property. Please ask us for more information about this if it is an important consideration for you.

The two bedrooms on the second floor also have bunk beds. These may be used either to accommodate 3-4 children in one room or a family wishing to have their children in the same room. In either case, the maximum occupancy remains 24 (including children).
