2018 was something of an annus mirabilis for Palermo, Sicily’s fascinating, historic capital city. Not only was it Italian Capital of Culture, but also host of the 12th edition of Manifesta, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art.

Manifesta 12

Manifesta is a prestigious, internationally acclaimed itinerant festival of contemporary art. Every two years it moves to a new host city, where, through a series of workshops, conferences, publications and educational initiatives, it maps out a "new cultural topography" founded on the prevailing and historical cultural identity of its temporary home. The culmination of the event is a three-month-long exhibition featuring the work of local and international artists. The theme for Manifesta 12 in Palermo  was "The Planetary Garden. Cultivating Coexistence."

Manifesta 12 ran from 16th June 2018 to 4th November 2018. Find out more here >>

Italian Capital of Culture 2018

Palermo’s cup runneth over! After being awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2016, and being chosen as host city for the 2018 edition of Manifesta, the news arrived on 31st January 2017 that Palermo had been chosen as Italian Capital of Culture 2018.

1000s of activities and initiatives, from exhibitions to concerts, and from cinema festivals to street food sagre took place not only in Palermo itself, but throughout the greater metropolitan area, from Monreale to Castelbuono in the Madonie Mountains.

In 2019, Matera has been chosen as one of two European Capitals of Culture.
