About the Villa

"The best villa in Sicily... There is an embarrassment of beauty at Don Arcangelo all’Olmo. It is exquisitely peaceful...It's like having your own five-star hotel...” Condé Nast Traveller, The Best of Sicily.

Don Arcangelo all'Olmo (or L'Olmo for short) is, quite simply, one of the very finest properties currently available for rent in Sicily. It is a superbly finished luxury villa in a stunning and perfectly peaceful setting between the sea and Mount Etna. The views, the gardens, the heatable pool and Jacuzzi, the style of the house, the fittings and furnishings and the relaxed but professional nature of the welcome make it a hard act to beat indeed!

"If there was something higher than excellent we’d have put that! Don Arcangelo all'Olmo provided us with a great opportunity to get the whole family together.” RS, UK, June 2019

Internet Connections Explained

BACK

All The Thinking Traveller's villas have some kind of Internet facility and, where possible, we try to ensure that this is an ADSL broadband Wi-Fi connection.

However, some rural areas and those far from the main towns and cities have not yet been connected to the high-speed broadband network. Therefore, in some of our villas we offer an alternative type of connection (specified in the amenities table of each individual villa page).

Please note that although we work very hard to provide reliable internet service at our villas, these services are potentially erratic and can fail due to network failures completely out of our control. We regret that we cannot accept responsibility for loss of connection due to such network failures.

Here is some information about the most common connection types:

ADSL Broadband

This is by far the fastest and most reliable connection type available and uses traditional copper wires. In the UK, ADSL is most commonly referred to as broadband. It is suitable for most surfing requirements. Generally an ADSL line is only available within two miles of a telephone exchange, so in rural or more remote areas it usually not available.

An ADSL Internet connection in a villa can then be distributed using a Wi-Fi router, allowing a wireless connection with one or more device, or by a cable, which can be plugged into most laptops.

NB If a fast, constant and reliable Internet connection is vital for you (i.e. you expect to be working a lot during your holiday), please specify this to your Villa Specialist. It may be better to rent a villa with an ADSL broadband connection.

3G WiFi Internet routers

In some of our villas, 3G Wi-Fi Internet connections are provided by a small router unit that uses the 3G mobile network, similar to that used by many mobile phones. The unit receives the signal and retransmits it wirelessly making it possible for a few devices to connect at the same time. 3G Wi-Fi units work best in the immediate area around them (i.e. they won’t create a Wi-Fi environment throughout the entire villa) and so the best connection will be within close range of the unit, usually in the same room.

The signal may be affected by weather conditions (i.e. strong winds or storms), and the overall strength depends entirely on the service provider's presence in the area. We cannot accept responsibility for slow or absent signals.

Please note that 3G Wi-Fi is provided for basic Internet browsing and checking of email only. Guests are requested not to download large files such as movies or make Skype video calls, as most units have a maximum monthly data usage of 10Gb.

NB If a fast, constant and reliable Internet connection is vital for you (i.e. you expect to be working a lot during your holiday), please specify this to your Villa Specialist. It may be better to rent a villa with a normal ADSL connection.

Mobile Broadband Internet Dongles/Keys

Dongles, or Internet keys, can be slotted into a USB port on your computer and use a data SIM card to connect to a 3G or other data network, normally supplied by mobile phone networks. At the villas where this is provided, clients are usually requested to buy their own data SIM card and top up as they go (details of where and how to purchase one are provided in the House Guide you will receive before departure).

The signal may be affected by weather conditions (i.e. strong winds or storms), and the overall strength depends entirely on the service provider's presence in the area. We cannot accept responsibility for slow or absent signals.

NB If a fast, constant and reliable Internet connection is vital for you (i.e. you expect to be working a lot during your holiday), please specify this to your Villa Specialist. It may be better to rent a villa with a normal ADSL conection.

WiMAX / Satellite connections

WiMAX and satellite Internet connections have performance levels similar to cabled ADSL hi-speed Internet connections. Wi-Fi access within the property is provided by a special modem-router. WiMAX and Satellite connections are present in our villas when there is no normal cabled broadband infrastructure in the area (still quite common in more remote areas). These kind of connections may be affected by atmospheric conditions, however, so we cannot guarantee that the signal will be as constant as cabled connections. The connection speed of this type connection in our Ionian Island villas is a little slower and comes with a limit of Mbs, so guests are requested not to download large files, stream films or use Skype to make calls.

Connecting to the Internet abroad using your smartphone or tablet (roaming)

As of June 2017, there are no roaming charges for EU citizens (with an EU provider) travelling within the EU.

If you are travelling from outside the EU and wish to use your smartphone or tablet while on holiday, here are a few tips for cutting down on foreign data-roaming charges:

The first thing to do is to check with your provider to see if there are any special deals available (there's usually something on offer). You should also make sure your phone is unlocked (you can ask your operator to do this) if you wish to buy a foreign SIM card while you're away.

If there are no suitable deals available from your operator (and your phone/tablet has been unlocked), we recommend you buy a local prepaid data SIM card (details of where and how can be found in your House Guide). It might also be useful to bring a cheap handset, put your UK SIM into the cheap handset and the local data SIM into your smartphone, so that any data you access will be charged at the local rate. If you do buy a local SIM, most smart phones can then be used to provide a Wi-Fi hotspot, providing data access for up to five devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Finally, when abroad, switch off 3G, switch off ‘data roaming’ on iPhones or switch the priority to Wi-Fi rather than 3G on Symbian devices, thus avoiding charges when your phone attempts to access emails.

Inside: accommodation at Don Arcangelo all’Olmo is spread over Il Casale, a handsome villa, and a beautifully restored, equally luxurious guesthouse, Casa all’Olmo. Access to Il Casale is via an impressive entrance hall with high vaulted ceilings and a decorative water feature. A few steps lead up to a wide corridor, at the end of which is a welcoming reception room with fireplace. To the left, down a few steps, is the convivial, warmly decorated dining area, conveniently located next to the kitchen where the staff will prepare your meals. To the right of the reception room, a few more steps take one down into a generously proportioned, beautifully appointed living area. Comfy armchairs and a sink-in sofa gather around a deep fireplace to one side, while to the other is a second sitting area with TV. Venerable grey lava stone floors provide a foil for colourful kilim rugs, white walls and lofty vaulted ceilings offer a blank canvas for a collection of objets d’art and paintings, furnishings encapsulate the aesthetic of effortless elegance, and banks of glazed doors open out onto the surrounding terraces and gardens. The atmosphere is at once refined, informal, welcoming and luminous, all attributes that define Don Arcangelo all’Olmo as a whole. A doorway to one side of this first living area leads into a second, even more commodious communal space. Furnished with three large white sofas and boasting another magnificent fireplace, this grand room is imbued with the owners’ exquisite taste, evident in the eclectic artwork, furniture and bibelots brought home after a lifetime of travelling around the world.

The bedrooms in Il Casale are spread over two wings. Those in the west wing are accessed via a staircase from the corridor near the entrance hall. Here there are four gorgeous bedrooms, each with its own name and distinct character. The first is Riccardo, a deluxe, double aspect double-twin with views of both the sea and Mount Etna, a panoramic balcony, and an en-suite bathroom with large walk-in shower. The second is Terrazzo, another deluxe double-twin with its own private panoramic terrace looking out over the gardens and the sea, and a luxurious bathroom with tub and separate shower. The third bedroom in the west wing is Ambra, also a deluxe double-twin. It has an en-suite bathroom with large walk-in shower. Last but not least comes Etna, a classic double-twin bedroom with great views of A Muntagna (as the locals call Etna), and an en-suite bathroom with tub and separate shower.

The east wing, also home to four bedrooms, is accessed from the first living area. Here a few stairs lead down to Archi, a generously proportioned deluxe double boasting an alcove sleeping area, an en-suite bathroom with tub and separate shower, and a shaded terrace area looking out over and accessing the gardens. The other three bedrooms in the east wing are on the first floor. Baldacchino is a deluxe double with a romantic four-poster bed, a balcony offering superb garden and sea views, and a spacious en-suite bathroom with tub and separate shower. Verde and Arancio are classic double-twins with en-suite shower rooms.

The remaining accommodation at Don Arcangelo all’Olmo is in Casa all’Olmo, a luxuriously refurbished guesthouse that mirrors the refinement, elegance and overall style of Il Casale. Situated just a few metres away through the gardens from its larger sister, Casa all’Olmo’s main entrance leads into a bright, welcoming open-plan space comprising a comfortable living area with fireplace, a kitchen and a dining table. Whitewashed wood-beamed ceilings offset the colourful walls and the kilim-covered terracotta floors, while views take in the gardens and the sea. A wide corridor with windows overlooking the terraces and gardens leads from this space to the four bedrooms: Marina, a double-twin with en-suite bathroom with tub and separate shower; Acquerelli China, a charming double-twin featuring chinoiserie frescoes on the walls and a sumptuous en-suite bathroom with tub and separate shower; Kilim, a double bedroom, once more with en-suite bathroom with tub and separate shower; and Tea, a double-twin with en-suite shower room.

Outside: you will be absolutely charmed by the colourful, fragrant grounds whose design harks back to the Arabic belief that gardens should be a place of delight and wonder. Extensive outside living areas, with terraces for dining and relaxing, lead down, via manicured lawns and lush, perfumed Mediterranean flora, past the panoramic Jacuzzi, to the beautiful heatable pool and yet more flourishing, luxuriant greenery. The views from the gardens to the sea are interrupted only by large expanses of citrus groves, while in the opposite direction, you will become transfixed by the awe-inspiring sight of Mount Etna... All in all this is one of the most spectacular locations in Sicily. Read more about Olmo's gardens.

Service: L'Olmo is a fully-serviced villa whose excellent staff, including cook, waiters and maids, will ensure that you fully enjoy your stay without having to worry about anything domestic. For meals, just let the staff know day by day whether you require lunch and/or dinner, tell them of any preferences you may have and they will organise everything else. Meals are paid for locally, please see the details above (below the amenities table).
