Five reasons to visit the Greek islands

AS TOLD BY OUR CLIENTS

In the 2017 edition of the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Travel Awards, the Greek Islands came first in the Best Island destination category (just ahead of Sicily). Why did travellers choose them rather than, for example, the Seychelles, the Balearics, Mauritius, and the Caribbean? We’ve analysed our clients’ feedback to identify the Top Five reasons they return, time and again, to the Ionian and the Sporades Islands. Head below for some holiday inspiration.

It's a beach life for me

If your perfect holiday includes spending time on the beach, our clients agree that you’ll be hard pushed to find better destinations than the Ionian or the Sporades Islands. Both archipelagos are blessed with paradisaically beautiful stretches of pebbly and sandy beaches, many with tavernas, lidos and bars, others hidden away and perfectly peaceful. Then there’s the gently lapping, translucent waters, whose irresistible palette entices with aquamarine, emerald, cobalt, turquoise and electric blue hues.

Taverna life

Whether arriving for lunch by boat after a morning’s sailing, or ambling down for dinner after a delicious day by your villa’s pool, the warm, welcoming environment and mouthwatering fragrances of your local seafront taverna will immediately put you in the mood for a long, convivial feast. The taverna traditions of the Ionian and the Sporades Islands are something our clients love. The cuisine is genuine, varied, healthy and fresh. Menus offer both seafood and meat, so there’s something for everyone, and the wine is excellent.

Go by boat

The ease of renting a boat in the Ionian and the Sporades Islands is a highlight for many of our clients. If you’re an experienced sailor, you’ll agree there are few places in the world that are better for recreational boating. If you’ve never taken a boat out on your own before, you’ll be hooked immediately. Within minutes you’ll have mastered the fundamentals and you’ll soon appreciate the thrilling freedom and manifold joys of cruising along the coast and swimming offshore in the limpid waters of idyllic bays.

Into the hinterland

The Ionian and the Sporades Islands share several characteristics, one of which is their green, mountainous interiors. Ancient mule paths wend their way through aromatic pine forests and whispering olive groves, past age-old monasteries and around sleepy villages where time seems to have stood still. Jaw-droppingly beautiful vistas pan out in all directions, and you’ll feel as if you have the island to yourself. A day or two exploring the Ionian and the Sporades Islands on foot or by bike is indeed a spirit-lifting experience.
