Mamma Mia!

HOW THE SPORADES ISLANDS HAD THEIR MOMENT OF FAME

A few years ago, Skopelos experienced a fleeting Warholian moment of fame. For millennia the island had enjoyed the quiet life, minding its own business, an unassumingly beautiful presence in the Aegean Sea.

Then a film troupe arrived, bringing with it Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Julie Walters and other Hollywood stars and work began filming Mamma Mia!, the Abba-inspired cinematic musical that would take the world by storm.

Mamma Mia! groupies from all around the world arrived in the hope of living out the romances of Sophia, Donna Sheridan, Sam, Harry and Sky. The islanders looked on quizzically, welcoming the visitors with their customary warm hospitality, waiting for the fad to pass.

Then, a film troupe arrived, bringing with it Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Julie Walters and other Hollywood stars.

If any non-Abba fans begrudgingly enjoyed the film, it was probably thanks to the splendid location of Skopelos, which, for some, outshone the thespian stars. Arguably the loveliest part the film is the wedding scene, which was filmed at the little white chapel of Agios Ioannis, perched high above the sea atop a rocky outcrop and accessed by just over 200 steps. Several other scenes were shot on beautiful Kastani beach on the west coast. Today, a few fans still arrive on Skopelos humming Abba tunes but most visitors come for what Skopelos has always been: a paradisiacal refuge for lovers of peace, gentleness and simplicity.
