Activities for children
GUIDE TO THE SPORADES
The Sporades Islands offer a wonderful environment for children to play, learn and have fun. Golden sandy beaches, enchanting villages and unspoilt natural surroundings inspire the imagination and promote curiosity. Here are a few great activities we know children of all ages will love.
Dolphin and seal spotting
Alonissos Marine Park, and the waters of the Sporades Islands as a whole, provide the perfect habitat for numerous species of marine animals. A day or two out on a boat is great fun in itself, but nothing beats the thrill of being escorted out to sea by a playful pod of dolphins or watching Mediterranean monk seals go about their daily business.
On your bike
For families who love cycling, the quiet, scenic roads of Skopelos and Alonissos are ideal for a day out pedalling. You can get off the beaten track, discover corners of the islands you would never usually find, and stop off for a swim here and there to cool down. There are bike hire shops on both islands.
If they’ve not seen it already, make sure your kids watch Mamma Mia! before they go to the Sporades. They’ll love retracing the steps of the film’s heroes, especially those 200 or so steps that lead up to the magnificently sited chapel of Agios Ioannis, where the wedding scene was played out.
A monastic adventure
A great adventure is a trip to the nigh deserted little island of Kyra Panagia near Alonissos. Home to wild-roaming goats, the island has been inhabited on and off by farming monks for over a thousand years. Drop anchor in the bay below, wade ashore, climb up the hill and visit the impressively remote 17th century monastery.
