Crossing the Rock, Sicily
The best bit: Watching the sun rise from the sea-facing terrace
You can see the property all the way from the time-warped harbour of Santa Maria La Scala (near Catania on the island's east coast) - it's a pretty, candyfloss-coloured confection poking above the water. This is the newly finished offering from the people who own the chi-chi Crossing Condotti hotel in Rome, and it's every bit as glam as its big brother. Enormous bedrooms in shades of milk and biscuit have sea views; there are two gilt-lined drawing rooms, cool cement-clad bathrooms, and a children's playground in the tropical gardens. Better still, you've got use of the owner's wooden Lancia speedboat for excursions down the coast. Deciding where to eat your chef-prepared dinner could be a problem; on the dining room patio, the main terrace, under the pergola by the cliff-edge pool...?
